Hints
A NOTE FROM CLARAI did not have much time. But I was careful. Everything you need is in the book, and everything in the book means something. I need you to find the answer to help me clear my name.
— C.P.
Working through the cluesThe suggested order is not arbitrary. It was designed by Clara to narrow the field gradually. If this is your first time through, following her sequence will give you the most satisfying experience. If you’re a more experienced puzzler, you’ll notice that some of Clara's clues will eliminate hundreds of tickets in a single pass, allowing you to cross out entire pages in minutes. You may like to work through those clues first, and save the precise, careful clues for when the field has already been narrowed down. You will know the difference between sweeping clues and more precise clues when you read them.
Your pencil or highlighters are your most important toolCross out decisively. A ticket eliminated by any single clue is gone permanently; do not second-guess yourself. The book only reveals its answer to someone willing to commit.
The five fields work togetherEach ticket carries five pieces of information. Some clues ask you to refer to the number. Some clues refer to the time of purchase. Some clues refer to the zone. A ticket that survives one clue may be crossed out when you work through the next clue. Trust the process; the funnel works.
When very few tickets remain, slow downThe last surviving tickets deserve careful attention. At this point, you are no longer eliminating; you are reading. Look at what remains and think about what it means.
Bonus puzzleUse a light pencil or a photocopy of the puzzle pages while testing which three clues apply. The bonus puzzle is smaller than the main investigation, so working through different possibilities shouldn’t take too long.

Frequently Asked Questions
The puzzle book has reached more people than I expected. These are the questions that keep arriving. I have answered them as honestly as I can.— Clara
How does Clue 9 work?On each single page, count how many times each booth appears. If a booth appears 7 or more times, cross out all tickets from that particular booth on that page. Do not cross out the whole page. Tickets from other booths stay unless another clue eliminates them. For example, if a page has:
- 7 tickets from B6
- 6 tickets from B2
- 3 tickets from B3
Cross out the B6 tickets only. The B2 and B3 tickets are not eliminated by Clue 9.
Remember: tickets already crossed out still count when you are counting how many times each booth appears on the page.Simple rule:
7 or more tickets from the same booth = cross out the tickets from that booth only.
Does the book include the solution? No. If you have worked through the book and applied every clue, submit your answer on the Solution page of this website. If you are right, you will find out what I found and what the police chose to ignore.
Do I have to apply the clues in order? No. Each clue works independently, so you are free to work through the clues in any order. A ticket that is eliminated by any single clue is eliminated regardless of when you apply it. That said, the order Clara chose is not arbitrary. It was designed to narrow the field gradually and make each element of the puzzle feel meaningful. First-time solvers are encouraged to follow her sequence.
I have applied the first fifteen clues and have no tickets remaining. What went wrong? One of two things: either a clue was applied too broadly and eliminated tickets it should not have, or a clue was applied to the wrong field. Return to the clues in order and check each one carefully.
Does the purchase time include the colon punctuation mark? No. For clues involving time digits, treat the time as four individual digits, with the hour and minutes together and ignore the punctuation mark. So 21:13 is 2, 1, 1, 3.
Is a digital version of the book available? This case-solving requires a physical book. The puzzle is built around crossing out tickets with a pencil or highlighters across hundreds of pages. A digital version is not currently available. Clara would probably say the data deserves better than a screen.
I submitted an answer and it was wrong. Can I get a hint?Yes. The hints page will help you without giving anything away. Work through the levels one at a time. Clara designed the clues to be solvable, not to defeat you.
I think I have found a duplicate ticket number. Is that an error?Every ticket number in the register is unique across all seven chapters. If you believe you have found a duplicate, check the numbers carefully; five-digit numbers that look similar are rarely identical. If you are certain, please contact us, and we will investigate.
Do I need to refresh the page to try another answer?Yes. If your ticket number is incorrect and you would like to submit another guess, refresh the page and complete the verification form again.
Will there be a second book?Clara has more envelopes.

Clara's Sixteen Clues
These are the clues Clara established. The first fifteen are designed to eliminate tickets that fail their conditions. The sixteenth works differently: it selects the final answer from the tickets that remain. Applied together, the clues will reduce 6,000 records to the one that matters.
Trust the data and eliminate carefully. If you need guidance, worked examples of selected clues are provided at the back of the book.
CLUE 1: THE GARDEN WAS CROWDED IN THE EARLY MINUTES OF THE HOUR.
Cross out every Garden ticket purchased from minute 00 to minute 20 of any hour, inclusive.
CLUE 2: THE ENDING DID NOT ECHO THE MINUTE.
Cross out every ticket where the final digit of the purchase minute is the same as the final digit of the TICKET #.
CLUE 3: THE ENDING DID NOT BELONG TO THE BOOTH.
Cross out every ticket where the final digit of the TICKET # is the same as the booth number.
CLUE 4: FIVE STRANGERS, AND AN EVEN HAND TO OPEN THEM.
Cross out every ticket where the TICKET # contains five different digits and the first digit is an even number.
CLUE 5: A POSITION IN THE ROOM, WRITTEN INTO THE TICKET MORE THAN ONCE, WAS NOT THERE BY CHANCE.
Cross out every ticket where the zone rank appears two or more times inside the TICKET #.
Refer to the back of the book to find the corresponding number for each zone rank.
CLUE 6: THE NUMBER NEVER CAME CLOSE TO HEAVY.
Cross out every ticket where the five TICKET # digits add up to 26 or 27.
CLUE 7: THE MINUTE DID NOT RUN IN A CROWD.
Cross out every ticket where the purchase minute appears three or more times on its page, counting the ticket itself. Crossed-out tickets count.
CLUE 8: WITHIN EACH CHAPTER THE TRUTH KEPT TO THE MIDDLE OF THE EVENING.
Within each chapter, find the first page that shows a purchase at 21:20 and the last page that shows a purchase at 22:58. Cross out every ticket on the pages outside this span. The two marked pages are included within the span.
CLUE 9: NO SINGLE BOOTH OWNED A PAGE.
Cross out every remaining ticket that sits on a page with seven or more tickets from the same booth. Crossed-out tickets count.
CLUE 10: THE SEAT DID NOT ANSWER TO THE BOOTH.
Cross out every ticket where the zone rank is the same as the booth number.
CLUE 11: THE KILLER’S BOOTH HAD SPOKEN JUST BEFORE THEM.
For each ticket, check the seven tickets immediately above it on the same page. Cross out the ticket being checked if none of the seven tickets above it have the same booth. Where fewer than seven tickets precede a ticket on the page, check only those tickets that appear above. The first ticket on every page has nothing above it, so this clue does not apply to it. Crossed-out tickets still count.
CLUE 12: THE KILLER BOUGHT INSIDE THE NINE O’CLOCK CROWD.
For each ticket, check whether another ticket on the same page was purchased from the same booth between 21:00 and 21:50 inclusive. If no other such ticket exists on the page, cross out the ticket being checked. Crossed-out tickets still count as a match.
CLUE 13: THE FACING PAGE CARRIED BOTH OF THE KILLER’S MARKS.
For each ticket, check the facing page for a single ticket with the same booth and colour. If there is no such match on the facing page, cross out the ticket being checked. A crossed-out ticket on the facing page still counts as a match.
CLUE 14: THE KILLER LINGERED NEAR THE HOUR THE HOUSE WENT QUIET.
On each page, cross out every ticket unless a purchase time of 23:47 appears on that page, or on one of the two pages that precede or follow that page. The two-page reach carries across chapters. A crossed-out ticket with a purchase time of 23:47 still counts.
CLUE 15: THE KILLER’S SEAT KEPT ODD COMPANY IN ITS CHAPTER.
Within each chapter, count how many tickets belong to each zone. Crossed-out tickets still count. If a zone appears an even number of times in that chapter, cross out every ticket with that zone.
CLUE 16: THE HIGHEST NUMBER LEFT.
For the tickets that have not been crossed out by the first fifteen clues, find the one bearing the highest TICKET #. That ticket belongs to the killer.
